THE ORIGINS OF 420

Why did we name our store – The 420 Store?
Let’s start with,

To some the saying 420 is not entirely clear; and there are many different thoughts on where the saying came from.

Some believe it’s the number of active chemicals in marijuana, others believe it could be related to Bob Dylan’s legendary “Everybody must get stoned” refrain from his hit “Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35” (12 multiplied by 35 does equal 420).

The most widely accepted origins, can be traced back to a group of California teens who used to hang out by a wall outside their San Rafael school—a meeting spot that inspired their nickname, “the Waldos.”

In the fall of 1971, the Waldos learned of an abandoned field of cannabis that was located in a clearing of a nearby forest. With a general idea of where the secret cannabis was growing. The group would routinely meet after school, partake in some Cannabis and go search for the elusive field of dreams, their meeting time? 4:20 p.m.

One of the Waldos had a connection with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, the term 420 gained popularity among the band members, crew, and loyal followers (Deadheads). With the Grateful Dead reach 420 was cemented into popular culture and became the “code” for Cannabis

So why did we call our store 420?

Our Name – The 420 Store is meant to pay tribute to Cannabis Culture and every person that had the persistence and determination to keep fighting for legalization; without you we would not be here.
